Getting there

Bank access: GoodDocumented open water: the stretch from Adare bridge downstream for about 1.5 km is open water requiring only a State licence (no club permit) for salmon (Limerick.ie). Guided/booked access via Celtic Angling's private beats at Cherrygrove and Adare (all-inclusive wild-brown-trout day/half-day fishing). Tributary access is club-controlled: Kilmallock/Kilfinane Anglers Association fish the Loobagh and upper Morning Star; the Camoge carries a fly-only, 6-trout, 10-inch-minimum restriction per Limerick.ie's tourism page. Much of the river around Adare can be waded at low water. Adare Manor's fishing offering is its private stocked estate LAKE, not the river — do not conflate the two. Access control for the Croom town stretch itself and for who (if anyone) actively administers a river-wide 'Maigue Angling Club' permit scheme is thin and not independently verified this session (see flags).

Weed: ModerateGenuinely documented, unlike most rivers researched so far: the resident fishing-guide operator (Celtic Angling, who fish the Adare and Cherrygrove beats specifically) describes high summer (Jul-Sep) as 'low levels, weed build-up' versus spring (Apr-Jun) 'good levels with clear, pacy runs which have not yet weeded'. This is a single-source-family claim (one operator's own site, repeated across two of its pages) — not independently cross-checked by an unrelated source, but it is specific and operationally stated rather than guessed.

Local notes

Character shifts along the fished middle river: expect faster, pacy glides and riffles through spring (April-June) before summer weed growth sets in, giving way to low, clear, weedy water by July-September that pushes fishing toward dawn/dusk; a coming tide can revive sport even in low summer flow near Adare. The river carries a full limestone hatch calendar including mayfly. Documented access/beats concentrate at Cherrygrove and Adare (guided wild-brown-trout fishing, avg fish around 3/4 lb with some to 2-3 lb) and the open water immediately below Adare bridge; upstream, the Loobagh (small wild browns, ~1/2 lb, high banks) and the Camoge (brown trout averaging around 1.5 lb) are dedicated fly-only tributary trout fisheries, each with its own size and bag limits — check locally. Below Adare the river is tidal to the Shannon Estuary, bringing sea trout and a salmon/grilse run into the mix — treat this reach as a mixed sea-trout/salmon water rather than a pure resident-brown-trout stretch. Twelve weirs sit along the river's length (short flat pools between them), a genuine hazard at high water.
