Dublin Trout Anglers' Association (DTAA, est. 1929) controls the Celbridge-Straffan fishery (~4.5 miles; productive south-bank fishing named from Straffan Bridge to Pausdeen Bridge) and cites 'upper sections' of the river too; day ticket EUR10 (adult), online purchase, season 1 March-30 September. North Kildare Trout & Salmon Anglers' Association (NKTSAA) controls water around Kilcullen and Newbridge/Droichead Nua; day passes EUR10, sold through local tackle shops and online. Clane Trout & Salmon Anglers Association (CTSAA) controls a stretch around Clane described (club material) as running from around 'Ballymore right down' to 'St Patrick's well to Athgarvan weir', with named internal markers (Paddy's Strand, Monaghan's, McSweeney's, McCarthy's); day tickets from local shops (Cleeres, Wallace's) for non-members. The K Club resort at Straffan separately holds a private beat of just over a mile of Liffey bank, stocked with brown trout, fished by resort guests with a ghillie, catch-and-release the house norm unless a guest asks otherwise, brown-trout season aligned to the national 1 March-30 September window; this is a distinct commercial access route, not a club permit. All club beat boundaries above should be treated as leads pending a direct local/club map check, not settled cadastral fact — confirm the exact stretch at permit purchase.

Weed: ModerateIFI's 2021 electrofishing stock survey (search-synthesis only, PDF unreadable to automated fetch) specifically notes 'excessive growth of instream vegetation' at the mid-Clane section of the surveyed reach. This is one site-specific observation, not a river-wide weed survey — do not assume the same density holds at Ballymore Eustace, Kilcullen or Celbridge without a local check.

Local notes

A meandering Kildare limestone river fished village-by-village rather than as one continuous water: Ballymore Eustace, Kilcullen, Newbridge, Clane, Straffan and Celbridge each anchor their own stretch and their own club. Weir pools recur throughout (Athgarvan and the Dominican College weir near Newbridge among them; a 2024 IFI barrier assessment counts over 20 weirs/barriers on the main channel) alongside riffles and glides, with instream weed growth documented as heavy at least at the mid-Clane section. The single most important local-knowledge item for this water is the ESB hydro system: Poulaphouca, Golden Falls (both near Ballymore Eustace) and Leixlip (well downstream, beyond Celbridge) can change river levels here quickly when compensation-lake storage forces a release, and there is no reliable public alert system for these releases — only ESB's published hydrometric forecasts — so treat any rise in level as arriving with little practical warning; this stretch runs entirely between Golden Falls and Leixlip, i.e. inside the hydro-controlled reach. Brown trout are the target species; be candid that this is a heavily hydro-mitigated fishery with a long compensatory-stocking history rather than a pristine wild-trout river, and that IFI's most recent (2021) electrofishing pass found trout numbers thin close to Ballymore Eustace, improving further downstream. Hatch-wise, expect dark olives and BWO through spring and summer, sedges on summer evenings, an iron blue hatch generally described as patchy, and mayfly as scarce-to-patchy rather than a reliable event; May and September are the two months most consistently praised.
