Spot the signs
Five things that mean report it now — you don't need to be certain.
Treat any of these as a suspected incident
Dead or distressed fish
Dead fish — or fish gasping at the surface, rolling, or gathering oddly in the margins.
Strong unusual smell
Slurry, silage, sewage, fuel, solvent or chemical.
Foam, scum or sheen
Foam, scum, an oily sheen, milky or discoloured water, or a cloudy plume.
Wrong-looking discharge
A pipe, drain, ditch or tributary discharging something that looks or smells wrong.
Suddenly lifeless stretch
A stretch that is normally full of life suddenly empty of fish and insects.
You don't need to be sure
The single most important factor in identifying a cause is how quickly the right people are told. Pollution disperses fast — the trail investigators need can be gone within hours. If it looks wrong, ring Inland Fisheries Ireland on 0818 34 74 24 and let them decide.
Anglers are the eyes on the water. Nobody else stands beside a river or lough as often, or notices as quickly when something is off. One quick, accurate call can make or break an investigation.
