Length

Fork length — nose to the fork of the tail. The repeatable one, and our house default.

Tighten the band

Prime — A healthy fish in good nick — the default.

Gravid hen — Pre-spawn female heavy with ova — runs heavier.

Spent kelt — Post-spawn and lean — runs lighter.

Why a range?

Weight rises with the cube of length, so a small length error triples into the weight — an honest answer is a band, not a single smug number. Add girth or condition and the band tightens. Baseline curves are general, not yet tuned to Irish fish. Saved sizes are your own logged best, never an official record.
